More than one in five Britons live below the poverty line. 4.5 million of them live on less that 50% of the poverty line. The economic fallout from COVID-19 will almost certainly make things worse.
Scripture speaks of God’s concern for the poor over one hundred times. Its message is clear: God calls His people to supply for the needs of the poor from their own resources.Might God be calling us to live more simply so we can give more generously?
In this four-part online Zoom series, Simply Living, we’ll examine the Scriptural teachings about our Christian obligations to the poor. We’ll look back to the witness of the Church through the ages for inspiration concerning how to go forward. And we’ll try to imagine how to live out our ancient faith in the context of twentieth-century society, being satisfied with enough and generous with the rest.
Each evening Frank Curry, Research Director of St Paul’s Institute and member of St Aldates, will present two filmed talks, after which we will have small group discussion in Zoom breakout rooms.
Topics include: The Poor in Christ’s new Kingdom; Merit and Grace; Property and Stewardship; Christian Egalitarianism; Being Satisfied with Enough; Disciplines of Compassion.
