School of Preaching

Simon Ponsonby and Dan Hames lead us through six sessions about preaching.

God has spoken in his Word, and he chooses preachers to herald and proclaim it for him.
Are you a budding preacher?
Is the Lord calling you to speak for him?
Join us as we consider the purpose and practice of preaching.

  • "Through my time at St Aldates I grew in so many ways. Engagement with theology classes stretched my understanding of God, but I also grew personally and practically. My placement within the Children’s department was so much fun, hard work, and taught me to lovingly serve even if it’s not always easy. Personally, I came to St Aldates deeply worried about what people thought of me but I got to discover more each day what it meant to walk with Jesus, to value His opinion, through the trials and joys. The intern house was a great home, living alongside others who challenged me to be more like Christ and who became like family – plus tons of laughs. I really valued my year working with St Aldates Church and I couldn’t recommend it enough."

  • "For me, the School of Ministry was an incredible year of growth in character and leadership whilst deepening my relationship with God. Having begun the internship with anxiety and deep insecurity in my identity, I walked out of the year confident in who I am in Christ. There was so much variety and different opportunities throughout the year to develop and explore ministry, and figure out what God was calling you too. Alongside this, the theological and pastoral teaching was super helpful and fun, but also supported the practical work that we were doing throughout the year. It’s a year of equipping and growth in your character – of allowing God to work in your life."

    Maddie Jones, Worship Intern, 2016-17

  • "As a relatively new Christian, I wasn't entirely sure what a year solely focusing on God and ministry would look like. Thankfully it was an incredible experience! The internship provided an amazing, safe place to build solid foundations in Christian community. The teaching and mentoring helped me form a good theological basis and deepen my relationship with Jesus. Department time challenged and grew me in ways I never expected. I was apprehensive for the year but I'd tell anyone considering it to go for it. I never imagined that I'd be doing what I am now but the internship started me on this adventure and I'm so grateful to God and St Aldates for giving me such an awesome opportunity!"

    Becca Sterry, Children’s Intern, 2015-16

  • "I am so grateful for this experience which so wonderfully combines a breadth of theological teaching with practical ministry experience and personal discipleship. It was tough at times, physically demanding and emotionally exhausting – but totally and completely worth it. Living with the other interns was a life-changing experience; as we spent our year praying together, encouraging each other and pushing one another to be more like Jesus. I left the internship with a renewed heart for prayer and intercession and well-equipped for a job in children’s ministry. If you’re looking for a year that will shape you, change you and make you more like Jesus then definitely consider the School of Ministry at St Aldates – it will equip you for a lifetime of putting God at the centre."

    Emma Dobson, Children’s Intern, 2014–15

  • "I came to the School of Ministry after experiencing deep anxiety as a student and having many assumptions undermined. Honestly, I didn't know what to expect and was deeply unsure of myself. In hindsight I shouldn’t have worried! The year was fantastic and provided a challenging but safe environment to explore deep personal issues as well as learn more about theology, apologetics and, most importantly, experience greater intimacy with Jesus. So I urge those of you sitting on the fence about applying to pray and seriously consider it – this year provides the perfect opportunity to ask the difficult questions, explore the foundations of your faith and grow closer to Jesus."

    Nathan Jones, ACT Intern, 2014–15
